Endre Tót

Short Info

Endre Tót (*1937 in Sümeg, Hungary, lives and works in Berlin & Budapest) is one of the influential Hungarian figures of conceptual art and the Fluxus movement. After an experimental phase in painting, Endre Tót began working on a new, conceptual art idea in 1970. The self-published artist's book My Unpainted Canvases (Budapest, 1971) marked his break with painting and the beginning of his conceptual work. In the brochure, which imitated a catalog, the artworks - Tót's unpainted paintings - were identified by white rectangles with different proportions and indications of their dimensions. Due to its genre, mail art was suitable for conveying Tót's idea-based art and at the same time represented the only way to connect to the international (Western) art scene behind the Iron Curtain. At the invitation of the DAAD, Tót went to West Berlin in 1978 and wrote on the Berlin Wall in a public action in 1979: "I am glad if I could write something on the other side of the wall". This public action is an example of Endre Tót's choice of subtle and humorous signs of resistance, using the power of words and their ability to act as a switch in the minds of readers. Tót's elusive political protest strategy can also be found in the public action and photo series I am glad [to stand here; to be able to laugh;...], which refers to the fragile freedom of public space.

Tót is represented in numerous national and international collections, including the Centre Pompidou/Paris, Museum Ludwig, Cologne & Budapest, Tate Modern/London, Museum of Modern Art/New York, National Museum/Warsaw, Museum van Hedendaagse Kunst/ Antwerp, Sammlung zeitgenössischer Kunst der Bundesrepublik Deutschland, Neue Nationalgalerie/Berlin.
