Monika Brandmeier (*1959 in Kamen, lives and works in Berlin and Dresden) combines poetics and absurdity with the edgy aesthetics of Minimal Art in her work. "If it works, this assemblage must work wonders," says Brandmeier. This duality is clearly evident in New Rich (2009). This expansive floor and wall piece thrives on the material contrast: shiny brass meets cheap corrugated cardboard. This obvious playing off of the material connotation emphasizes its contrasts and the significance of the value gap. The arrangement of the materials in relation to one another invites poetic reflection on social class issues. It is because of this minimal, gentle slippage that Brandmeier's work cannot be assigned to any counterculture, art movement or classic feminist art. Instead, it defines a poetic space beyond restrictive debates and definitions. Monika Brandmeier lives and works in Berlin and Dresden and has been Professor of Sculpture at the Dresden University of Fine Arts since 2001.
