RETHINKING IMAGES
The fact that the human brain does not produce an objective image of the world, but initially perceives what matches our own expectations, is now considered a commonplace in brain research. In order to press reality into a coherent model for us, it fills in gaps and overwrites sensory impressions that do not fit into the picture. This means that even conspicuous changes in a visual setting are not recognized when so-called "change blindness" comes into play - the decisive factor, however, is that the changes occur simultaneously with an interruption, for example in the form of a blink. Our biological hardware therefore already provides a clearly limited representation of external reality. If we turn to the mental operating system, which is home to cultural imprints and ideas, among other things, things don't get any better. If these imprints and ideas do not at least overlap, can we communicate at all? Can we decode what comes from foreign contexts? The exhibition RETHINKING IMAGES brings together three artists who think in different ways about which attitudes and cultural ideas are or can be transported visually. In doing so, they challenge the viewer's perception as well as the reflection of their own discourse horizon - so better not blink.
