Painting and its material conditions are at the heart of Franziska Reinbothe's (*1980 in Berlin) artistic work: What does it take for a picture to become a picture? And what doesn't it need? In her search for answers, Franziska Reinbothe removes parts of the painted fabric or breaks the stretcher frame in a sometimes brute manner.
"In painting, I am interested in what usually remains hidden: the back of a picture and its edges. To make them visible, I compress canvases, expose stretcher frames or do without them altogether. I stretch, fold, break, cut and/or sew my pictures after the painting process is finished. Some of them then protrude far into the room, others have already completely detached themselves from the wall."
In addition to the transformations, Franziska Reinbothe is also presenting a second group of works in the BESTFORM exhibition, in which she also pursues her curiosity and her desire to experiment and paints with other means. Here, chiffon fabrics provide color, depth and surface texture, revealing the construction of the stretcher frame behind.
Franziska Reinbothe is represented in numerous collections, including the Collection of Contemporary Art of the Federal Republic of Germany, the Hamburger Kunsthalle, the Kunsthalle Bielefeld, the Kunsthalle Rostock, the PEAC Museum Freiburg and the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden.
BESTFORM is Franziska Reinbothe's second solo exhibition at Galerie Mathias Güntner.
