Interview mit Thorsten Brinkmann (Caroline Schilling)

"In this way, things that have been there mix with things that have been added to form something new."

A Grotesque Palace Rises in Pittsburgh (Jason Foumberg)

Pittsburgh's newest, biggest artist project is also its best-kept secret—and it's literally full of secrets. The Hamburg-based photographer Thorsten Brinkmann has transformed a disused residence into an artist-designed funhouse featuring a labyrinth of hidden rooms. It's Kurt Schwitters's Merzbau meets Gregor Schneider's totes haus, a habitat furnished with a commentary on the experience of dwelling spaces.

La Hütte Royal (Nick Compton)

German artist Thorsten Brinkmann has transformed a dilapidated, abandoned family home – and a particularly unattractive take on the suburban vernacular style at that – in the Troy Hill area of Pittsburgh into a (still slightly dilapidated) permanent art work.

Mythos Wagner. La Vie an Roserock. Thorsten Brinkmann

The Hamburg artist Thorsten Brinkmann deals in a playful-ironic distance with the Nordic mythical figures from Wagner's cosmos of figures. For the design of the mythical figures, which he has created especially for this exhibition, Brinkmann draws on a constantly growing collection of found objects.

Thorsten Brinkmann. La Hütte Royal

Between 2011 and 2013 Thorsten Brinkmann transformed a deserted house in Pittsburgh, decorated in 1970s style, into a total work of art. Over the space of four stories Brinkmann created more than dozen new rooms; in some places he took over the ensembles he found there, turning them into readymades. After his intervention, the unusual work of art now features, among other things, a boxing ring, a cinema, many of the artist’s photographic works, and a forest room (including a tent for camping at home), and last, but not least, a Raleigh chopper for Amazons.

For this limited and signed set, Brinkmann combines an LP from the abandoned record collection with a booklet that provides a look inside the house.
The publication is available at the Gallery Mathais Güntner in Hamburg.
