Endre Tót
Endre Tót (*1937 in Sümeg, Hungary, lives and works in Cologne & Budapest) is one of the defining Hungarian figures of Conceptual Art and the Fluxus movement, the first being characterized by idea-based works and the second by the aim of erasing the border between art and life.
After conducting Informel and Minimal experiments in the medium of painting in the 1960s, Endre Tót began working on non-image and text based pieces. His work included artist books, typewriter pieces, postcards, multiples such as rubber stamps, as well as photographies and prints. Endre Tót later expanded his range of media to public actions and their documentation.
The self-published artist book My Unpainted Canvases (Budapest, 1971), marked his break – for the following decades – with painting and the beginning of his conceptual work. In the booklet, which imitated a catalogue, the artworks – Tót’s unpainted paintings – were signified by white rectangles of varied proportions and indications of their dimensions. The first artist’s book marked not only the closing of an era, but also the first expressions of his defining idea of nothing, or absence.
Mail art was, by virtue of the nature of its genre, suitable for conveying Tót’s idea-based art, while also constituting the only means for connecting to the international (western) art scene from behind the iron curtain. In 1971, he initiated a correspondence with the most prominent figures of the international avantgarde. This extensive mail art activities made him reached international public awareness: while he lived and worked in Hungary until 1978, his artworks were featured at numerous international exhibitions. By 1974, his artist books which had initially been self-issued were published by prominent international galleries and publishing houses.
In 1979, at the occasion of a DAAD-Scholarship in West Berlin, he wrote on the Berlin Wall: “I would be glad if I could write something on the other side of the wall”. This public action expressed his exhaustion and conflict with the Hungarian communist regime. This public action is an example of Endre Tót's choice for subtle und humorous signs of resistance, using the power of words and their ability to function as switches in the minds of their readers. Tót’s elusive political protest strategy can also be found in the public action and photographic series I am glad [to stand here; to be able to laugh;…], which suggests the fragile liberty of public space. The 0 - series declares his opposition to the distortion of meaning through stating that no meaning is better than a false one.
Endre Tót’s international exhibitions venues include among others the Museum of Modern Art (New York), the Centre Pompidou (Paris) and the Tate Gallery (London). The Museum Ludwig in Cologne (1999), The Museum Friedericianum in Kassel (2006) and the MODEM in Debrecen, Hungary (2012) presented retrospectives of his work. Endre Tót has been organizing public actions in European cities since 1976.
