Sarvenaz Mostofey's first solo exhibition in Berlin Our Voice Is Echo! explores the captivating story of a women's folk music group active in the 1970s and 1980s. Ziba Shiravan, a female Afro-Iranian musician, led a folk music ensemble in the southern Iranian province of Hormozgan. The music they played was lively and daring and subverted social norms. The use of instruments and the role of a musician and entertainer, usually reserved for men, was challenged by her spirited performances, an act of rebellion against the patriarchal climate.
Once silenced, Ziba's voice now resonates as a symbol of empowerment in the loud echo of Iranian women's resilience and defiance. Sarvenaz Mostofey's retelling of Ziba's story is an interplay between historical reflection and contemporary artistic expression.
The exhibition is a collaboration between Centrala Berlin e.V. and Mathias Güntner Gallery. As part of Centrala Berlin's program, which focuses on showcasing emerging voices from Central and Eastern Europe and the broader East, we aim to present these perspectives annually within the Mathias Güntner Gallery's accompanying program. The exhibition is supported by the Berlin Senate Department for Culture.
BIOGRAPHY
Sarvenaz Mostofey is an Iranian sound artist and composer based in Berlin. Her projects incorporate space as an active attribute in the art-making process and explore the interconnections between modes of sonic attention. Her recent compositions are based on recordings, archival research and spatial attributes of everyday life. She holds a BA in Photography from Tehran Art University and an MA in ArtScience from the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. She is a former resident of the Akademie Schloss Solitude in Stuttgart. Sarvenaz Mostofey is currently an artist fellow at centrala Berlin e.V.
